The 737 shares cabin width dimensions with the 707 and 727. The 737 have exceeded even the wildest dreams of Boeing and it's employees. Originally thought of as a short-haul regional jet to compete with the DC-9 and BAC1-11, it has gone beyond that flying routes and distances more 727ish . The latter two were T-tail/rear engine designs and Boeing did consider the sexy innovative tail as a sign of the future (727). There were some concerns however about the"deep stall" phenomenon inherent in T-tails, so a study on underwing engine placement was undertaken. Deep stall, although a problem was considered workable but the design team was able to squeeze an extra 6 seats out of the wing /engine design. Thus the 737.
